WHO AM I

My career as civil engineering consultant began ten years ago, when I started working as a CAD draftsman. In April 2007, I graduated from the Technological Educational Institute of Piraeus, with a BEng. in Civil/Structural Engineering with a 2-1 grade, having attended a 4-year course whose content also touched architectural and building science aspects. In August 2008, I was licensed as a Civil Engineering Technologist.
My objective from the beginning of my carrier till now is to learn as much as I can about the field of the design and construction of private residences, expanding my knowledge in all related fields, with the aim of having a familiarity with all of its aspects.
I have taken part in hundreds of surveying projects with various roles (calculations, data processing, GPS surveying, draftsman, positioning of land properties on maps), since during the past years there was a big deal of demand for such projects. The market demand for such projects occurred in the municipality in which the consultancy I have been working for has its offices, for many reasons (completion of the national cadastre, changes in forestry maps, corrections submission to the Greek cadastre etc.). I also have consulting experience in various other types of architectural, building science and civil engineering projects. My experience in these types of projects allows me to undertake projects of similar nature fully by myself (structural analysis of buildings, retrofitting of buildings, energy assessment of buildings, passive fire protection of buildings, building surveying, BIM and CAD modeling)  or with the help of other professionals (architectural design of buildings, design of water and wastewater building installations).
In September 2009, I was enrolled in the 3rd year of the MEng. course in Civil and Structural Engineering of the University of Bradford, from which I graduated in July 2011 with an upper 2-1 degree. After my graduation since June 2012, I am licensed as a Civil and Structural Engineer with IGreekE.
In October 2012 till January 2013, I completed successfully 3 courses regarding the energy assessment of buildings, boilers and air conditioning systems and this led to my charteredship as an energy auditor, in October 2013.
After extensive study of the educational material of the courses and personal research, I obtained significant knowledge about many energy installations of buildings (photovoltaics, heating systems, air condition systems, trombe walls, solar greenhouses etc.).
During my career I have attended more than 20 seminars in my field or related fields and they have helped me in believing that through little supervision and cooperation with more experienced colleagues, I can solve any practical problem that could occur in my field or related fields.
From September 2013 till now, my main occupation is a Ph.D. researcher in a course that started in December 2012. The course so far has expanded my programming skills in Matlab (mastered the ability to construct optimization algorithms, FEM modeling, FEM applications in optimization), as well as it has offered me valuable knowledge in using engineering optimization tools (genetic algorithms, PSO, neural networks, simulated annealing, fuzzy analysis, Monte Carlo methods, combinatorial optimization, multiple linear regression). My research focused on proposing a methodology for the structural and energy performance optimization of steel and reinforced concrete buildings including life cycle cost analysis considerations. In March 2014 and in June 2014, I published parts of my research in two different engineering optimization conferences (OPT-i  2014, EngOpt 2014). In October 2014 I was invited to write a chapter in the journal “Engineering and Applied Sciences Optimization: Volume 1 - Dedicated to the memory of Professor M.G. Karlaftis”, that will be published by Springer. The publications presented ways to optimize many different building components (insulation profiles, windows type and area, HVAC equipment, PV array sizing, steel beams and columns, RC beams and columns, frame bay length optimization) for a life cycle of 10 to 30 years.
